Lounging and Limping

Most of today was spent building in time to get to the next part of the travel home as Chrissi in clearly excruciating pain.  A bit of waiter service for her at breakfast as was she really was grimacing with every stride and needed that energy conserved for us to get home.  Last time to wolf down a couple of 'berliners', small jam donuts in case you were getting worried.

Packed up to leave the Park Inn, a hotel I will not miss. Apart from the odd post communist refurbishment of the room mentioned earlier, the wifi has been rubbish too.  The upside is location and a reasonable breakfast.  The location did meant it was a short 'hop' onto the S9 train to the airport which we were in just after midday, passing through one of the other now shut down airports en route, Schonefeld. This really has been a trip of lost airports!

A very long, drawn out walk to the airport lounge, but with a slight delay on the plane not the worst places to rest weary legs.  On the same flight as family Breese and they also joined us in the lounge. The other big news yesterday is we have reached BA Silver Status and can now take guests into the lounge, as well as use the lounge on any trip, business or economy. Woo hoo...

Final token German gesture, a pretzel and non alcoholic beer.  All the snacks consumed, and then went the long way round to the gate - not the circumstances to do that. Having left the lounge before the Breese gang they were well ahead of us in the queue at the gate. Not a good look.

Row 2 on the flight though was a good location, able to enjoy the vegetarian ploughmans before they ran out, and had my last beer of the trip.  Not gone mad apart from the first night, but back to abstinence again now on UK soil.  The not real fun landing routine even less fun with Chrissi on no legs, we could have used a wheelchair but that may have ended with even more injury if I was 'driving'.

Bus to purple parking, then a 2 hr drive into the sunset ... which was the fitting close to this trip, before the sun rises on the next one abroad in early July.

  1. Hi Lloyd,

Poor Chrissi, it sounds really awful.

Thanks for the reminder of the name of the old East Berlin Airport that the current airport got built over, it clearly completes the set for this trip.

Well done on your Silver Status with BA, you've made a big effort to get there, hope you enjoy many visits.

Our next trip is in June, so we'll blog our way through France and Spain on our way to Wellington's battlefields in Portugal - plenty of Sharpe episodes to relive.

Where are you heading in July? I hope Chrissi is feeling well enough to enjoy it.

    1. over to you for the next blog then, very much looking forward to it. July currently we are flying in / out of Croatia with a side trip to Bosnia as a minimum 2 Balkan country trip. Chrissi moving a bit better today, but all back in work now and sitting on a chair so not running half marathons again yet!

    2. During the 80s Yugoslavia was my destination of choice - Rovinj, Split, Cavtat, Starigrad on the island of Hvar, Herceg Novi and Sarajevo and finally Dubrovnik (so Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro in current terms) all before they started shooting at each other. I've been back to Cavtat once since the war - lovely country but complex history.

      Have you been before?

      Where are you heading for?

I look forward to reading all the details.
